The reason for the rejection of most international students for admission in the USA lies in the inability of the their documents to convince the admission committee that they are ideal candidates for admission.

𝟭. 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲- The SOP is the most important aspect of your application. The SOP if well written has the potential of elevating an ordinary profile to an irresistible one. Note, the SOP is not your bragging document or some historical story place. It is one document where you show you have deeply thought about Masters programme, processed your long and short term goals and have a solid plan towards achieving your goals. If you can present a coherent narrative in a short and effective document that is your SOP, you are on your way to a great admit.

𝟮. 𝗟𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗟𝗼𝗥): These are often ignored by so many students. A lot of the LoRs you submit for admission are just long paragraphs of praise. It fails the basic test of selling the abilities and aptitude of the student. A winning LoR have to compliment the SOP. There has to be 2–3 qualities of the student backed by examples. There has to be an endorsement of technical skills relevant to the student’s goals backed by examples. Such letters from the right people sometimes land you the admit straight away! Note, a previous employer can also write you a LoR.

𝟯. 𝗔𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗖𝗩: The third document that makes the difference in your application is the Academic CV. Your academic CV is your profile document. While there are several components that can be added to your academic CV, the following are what drops admission at your doorstep;

- Person Information (Name, email, LinkedIn profile)

- Education (List your Degree, CGPA, Adviser and Research work)

-Continuing Education (List your certification from Educational Institutions Not MOOC)

- Experiences (Research, Professional, Teaching)

- Publications and Scholarship

-Skills (List in sub-headings Technical, Computational, Research etc)

-Leadership and Community Service

- Referees

𝟰. 𝗪𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲: For Universities that require them, a writing sample is a determinant document for your admission. The writing sample should be something that reflects your research interests and demonstrates your writing and research abilities. Choose something that you are proud of. If you have a piece that has been published, then this is an especially great choice for the writing sample, but unpublished pieces are fine as well.
